The following Legislative Alert was issued by Oklahoma Humane Federation today... please read the following and HELP (send an e-mail to your representative)!!

Southern Oklahoma dog breeders have targeted the following Oklahoma senators, asking them to oppose HB 1332.

The breeders claim that compliance with the very basic standards called for under HB 1332 would put them out of business.  USDA regulations call only for a dog to have a cage six inches longer than the dog and six inches taller so they can stand up. There are also standards of cleanliness and record keeping.

The breeders opposing these standards may think that cruelty, filth and fraud are acceptable, but most Oklahomans disagree.

Currently only breeders who sell dogs through a third party, for example to pet stores, are compelled to get a USDA license.  As second to the highest, “breeder state,” in the nation, Oklahoma is the only state with a large number of USDA regulated dog breeders that has no state regulations covering those who are not required to have a USDA license.

Please e-mail or call or write each one and tell them that HB 1332 is the only way to eliminate substandard kennels, cruelty and fraud.

Please use the following points:

·         HB 1332 simply creates minimum standards which are already in place for the USDA regulated kennels in our state.  This is a fair bill which brings Oklahoma up to the standards in place all around us.

·         Substandard facilities are associated with animal cruelty, consumer fraud and increased crime.  This is an important step to stop the tragedies associated with unlicensed dog dealers.

·         A healthy dog breeding industry will thrive in Oklahoma only when substandard competition is closed.

Dogfighting/Cockfighting Reward Program
The Humane Society of the United States has launched a reward program for Oklahomans who report cases of cockfighting and dogfighting.
It will pay up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a cockfighter or dogfighter. Cynthia Armstrong, state director of The Humane Society, said dogfighting and cockfighting not only hurts the animals but is bad for the communities where they occur. She said those who suspect someone is holding animal fights in their neighborhood should call The Humane Society at 202-452-1100. The identity of those who call will be protected. Attorney General Drew Edmondson said cockfighting and dogfighting rings are generally hotbeds for other types of illegal activity, including gambling, drugs and illegal weapons. Dogfighting has been illegal in Oklahoma since 1982. Cockfighting was outlawed by a statewide vote of the people in 2002. Both crimes are a felony.
